Since 1935, Emmen's Noorder Dierenpark was located here until it closed its doors in 2015 to move to another location under the name Wildlands Adventure Zoo. On the grounds of the old animal park, a public park full of unprecedented possibilities was created.
You can enjoy art, culture, theatre and other educational things here. There is an educational farm with elderly geese and a rat sewer, a film house, The Emmen Night Watch, a Museum of Contemporary Tibetan Art, work by graffiti artists and much more.
Between 1942 and liberation, several people in hiding found a safe place here. The owner of the park, Willem Oosting, gave the people in hiding a place to sleep above the wildlife enclosures, during the day they could then work in the park as zookeepers. In the attic of the enclosure, they built a maze with straw bales, which muffled the sound of Radio Oranje so they could follow the news. The maze was so good that one of the hiders had to pick up Willem with pans full of food halfway through the ingenious construction.
