The Rembrandt Bridge is a long double wooden white drawbridge on thick mooring posts over the wide Galgewater, in the middle of Leiden. The bridge is an extension of Weddesteeg, where in 1606 painter Rembrandt van Rijn was born and lived for a long time. At that time, there was also a similar bridge here, but unfortunately it was demolished in 1817. It was only in 1983 that this replica of the then bridge was built.
Mill De Put on the other side of the bridge is a replica of Jan Jansenzoon Put's standerd mill that stood here in Rembrandt's time. Harmen Gerritsz van Rijn, Rembrandt's father, also had a similar standing mill on Weddesteeg, but it no longer exists.
