The Meestoof Regional Museum houses a special Norwegian gift house, a direct reminder of solidarity after the 1953 flood disaster. This house is one of 326 homes that Norway donated to the Netherlands to support communities affected by the disaster. Stavenisse, which suffered badly from the disaster with 156 victims, received 19 of these homes.
This particular house, originally built on Koning Haakonstraat, was demolished due to circumstances and later carefully rebuilt on the grounds of the Streekmuseum Meestoof. Visitors can explore this house, with an interior that breathes the atmosphere of the 1950s, during the museum's opening hours. It offers a fascinating look at how the Netherlands recovered after the devastating floods, with an interior that reflects the spirit of the times.
The picture shows Queen Juliana visiting the disaster area in South Holland. She stands at a gift house in Strijen.
