Regional Museum De Kalkovens in Dedemsvaart is the place to discover the region's industrial past. The museum is located on a historic site with three impressive, restored lime kilns. This is where shells used to be burnt to produce shell lime, an important material for construction and agriculture in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors here learn all about the process of lime burning and how this industry contributed to the development of Dedemsvaart.
The museum offers more than just the lime kilns. The ‘Leshuus’ is an atmospheric antiquities room full of photos, documents and objects showing daily life in the former municipality of Avereest. The peat barn brings to life the history of peat extraction, another important economic pillar of the region. Outside, the authentic peat ship ‘De Avontuur’ is docked, where you can experience what it was like to live and work on a peat ship.
