The Ramparts of Retranchement were built in 1604 by order of Prince Maurits. The defensive work had to protect the Zwin channel and the city of Antwerp from attacks by the Spanish. The name Retranchement is French and means ‘bulwark’ or ‘stronghold’. The village that later developed near the ramparts took its name from this fortification.
On the ramparts you can still see old entrenchments, such as Fort Berchem. This fort can be reached via a drawbridge from the Oude Zeedijk. The area breathes history and shows how strategic this part of Zeeland Flanders used to be.
Today, it is a beautiful green nature area. Among others, the rare tree frog lives here. Especially in spring, and especially in May, you can hear them croaking loudly. The combination of nature and history makes the Wallen van Retranchement a special place to visit.
