Experts still disagree about the location of Vermeer’s actual home. The Vermeer Centrum placed an information cube across from Oude Langendijk 25, but makes no mention of the fact that this might have been the house of his mother-in-law, Maria Thins. Some believe the entire Vermeer household – more than ten people – lived there with her.
But the director of the Vermeer Centrum, Herman Weyers, doesn’t buy that theory, even though a recent study seems to support it. Seems, because there’s still no definitive proof. Weyers believes it’s just as likely the house was located on the other side of the former Molenpoort (the narrow alley next to the house), before the Maria van Jesse Church was built there in the late 19th century.
Be careful if you walk through the Jozefstraat (formerly Molenpoort) to the other side of the church. Cyclists and scooter riders often pass through and assume pedestrians will move out of the way.
