This old Vecht arm shows what the river looked like until the beginning of the last century. Here the heavily laden Vechtzompen (a traditional flat-bottom boat on the Overijsselse Vecht) sailed, downstream. The bends in the river were wide. A well-known story is that of the farmer working in his field. Sincerely friendly, he waved to the passing boatman and did so again an hour later, because that was how long the barges took to navigate the loops in the river.
The cargo consisted of Bentheimer Sandstone, transported from Germany on a historical mission. Among others, the Palace on Dam Square in Amsterdam was built with these stones.
This arm is now no longer connected to the river; this may change in the future, providing additional storage capacity during wet periods. This will prevent flooding. This location is open until sunset.
