A few years before Jan Steen, contemporary of Rembrandt van Rijn, moved to Warmond with his family, his father-in-law Jan van Goyen had preceded him. Master painter Jan van Goyen painted the ruin of the Old Tower of Warmond in 1646. It had been a ruin since 1573, when, during the Leiden Resistance, the people of Leiden set fire to all major buildings to ensure they would not be besieged by the Spaniards. It has been rebuilt several times over the years, but partly still a ruin.
Jan van Goyen's painting is on display at Museum Bredius in The Hague.
