In the middle of the Green Heart lies Boskoop, traditionally an important tree nursery area full of waterways and small ditches. These served as waterways for the Boskoop schouw, a wooden flatboat for transporting trees. The history of tree farming goes back to the 15th century, when people started growing fruit trees. Strawberries were grown on the ground between the fruit trees. Ornamental cultivation as we know it today started around 1860, when well-known Dutch botanists travelled to the Far East to look for plants.
In the museum, you will see a collections of tools, utensils and museum treasures that tell the growers' history. You will learn about the traditions that were important to Boskoop's cultural identity. A fully, old-fashioned tree nursery house completes the scene.
Tree nurseries are still evolving: automation, robotisation, changed packaging methods, ever larger transports and economies of scale characterise today's tree nursery.
