The Oude Veenkoloniën are a remnant of the landscape that was formed over centuries of peat extraction. Until the 17th century, this area was uninhabited marshland and endless peat bogs. After peat extraction, a new landscape emerged, consisting of a mix of open water, reed beds and grasslands. This makes it a paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers.
This varied area is perfect for walking and cycling. Here and there you can still see traces of the old peat extraction, such as narrow canals and peat pits. In spring and summer beautiful wild flowers bloom, and with a bit of luck you might spot a kingfisher or a spoonbill.
