Leinwijk is a nature reserve on the eastern shore of the Zuidlaarder Lake, near the town of Wolfsbarge in Groningen. The area was set up in 1999 by Het Groninger Landschap, in which former farmland was transformed into a tidal marsh. This marsh acts as a natural water purification plant for the Zuidlaardermeer and is part of the Hunze stream valley system.
A striking feature of Leinwijk is the Kikkoman windmill, an American wind engine that pumps water from the Zuidlaarder Lake into the area. This windmill ensures continuous water movement, which is beneficial for the development of shore and aquatic plants. In addition, the windmill helps to transfer fish to the marsh, where they find a suitable place to spawn.
There is a 3-kilometre walking route through the area for visitors. Along the way, you will pass a watchtower with a panoramic view of Leinwijk and the Zuidlaarder Lake. The area is rich in flora and fauna; the bluethroat breeds here, and plants such as marsh greenweed can be found. The beaver has also made its home here.
