The Hegewiersterfjild is a true bird paradise. Natuurmonumenten (National Trust) has redesigned the area in recent years. More than 200,000 cubic meters of ground have been excavated, making the Hegewiersterfjild very wet and therefore ideal for both Wadden and meadow birds. You can find large numbers of barnacle geese, golden plovers, godwits, lapwings, little plovers, avocets, white-fronted geese, curlews, oystercatchers, wigeons, redshanks and redfish all year round. The peregrine falcon flies in search of prey in the autumn. There are salt-loving plants, but also the golden primrose and various orchid species feel at home here and make it a colourful whole, especially in spring.
The photo of the Avocet was taken by Teun Veldman for Natuurmonumenten (National Trust).
