Nature reserve De Zanderij - Exloo

Nature reserve De Zanderij was once a sand excavation and has since undergone a beautiful transformation into an oasis of peace and biodiversity. From 1910, sand was mined in De Zanderij by the Dutch Railways. This sand was essential for the construction of railways and was transported via a special railway line from Exloo station to various parts of the Netherlands.

Until the 1930s, De Zanderij played a key role in the development of the Dutch railway network. After sand extraction ended in 2010, nature had a chance to reclaim the area. We can now see the beautiful result of that here: a unique landscape with steep sand walls, water features and rich flora and fauna.

While walking through the area, you can enjoy the song of the yellowhammer or the acrobatic flights of bank swallows, which dig their nests in the sandy walls. With a bit of luck, you will spot the rare garlic toad, which hides in the area's waters.

A special role in nature management is played by the two Scottish Highlanders: Bolle and Berend. These imposing cattle help keep the landscape open through their grazing. Anglers can also indulge in the fishing pond, where specially constructed jetties offer a unique fishing experience, including night fishing for carp. Please note, this requires booking and permission in advance.

The diversity of landscapes makes it a wonderful place for nature lovers and photographers. You can quietly enjoy the surroundings here, listen to the many bird species or just relax by the water.
