The Yerseke Moer is one of the oldest polders in Zeeland. The area was diked in as early as the 11th century. The many holes and bumps were created by peat excavation for salt extraction. This is also known as ‘moernering’. Nowadays, the traces of marsh creation create a unique bird breeding area. To give the birds sufficient rest, the core of the area is only accessible from 15 July to 15 October. Fortunately, the cycle paths can be used all year round.
