In the Middle Ages, this area was used for salt extraction, which sagged grasslands. That has given the area a unique character. It consists of two parts: the Hedge area and the Goose area. In the Hedge area blackberry and hawthorn function as a natural fence, in spring it is a beautiful white sea of flowers. White-fronted geese forage in the Geese area in winter.
De Poel is an eldorado for birds such as the Dunnock, Linnet, Mockingbird and Garden Warbler. They are crazy about the red hawthorn berries. But it is also an important meadow bird area for species such as the black-tailed godwit and lapwing, and for field birds such as the skylark and yellow wagtail.
