In 2006, the island of Tiengemeten, the very last real island in the south-west of the Netherlands, was returned to nature. A hole was made in the dike in the south, so that a large part of the island is now under the daily influence of the river. Similarly, part of the island has become a vast swamp.
The island has a varied landscape with stretches of untouched wilderness. As a result, there is a great wealth of plants and animals where you can encounter beavers and sea eagles, for instance. Around the cosy little harbours there is plenty to do for young and old.
You reach the island with the Nieuwendijk-Tiengemeten ferry. It sails daily from 10am to 5pm.
