It is hard to imagine now, but millions of years ago whales and sharks swam where the Achterhoek and Liemers landscapes now lie. When the ice ages set in, the sea slowly changed into landscape with rivers and river dunes. On this piece of land, mammoths, Neanderthals, Germanic tribes and Romans lived. Over the centuries, more and more layers of soil formed.
In the Min40Celsius visitor centre, you can look for bones in the ground yourself. Or try to make fire with a flint just like a primeval man. Who knows, you might even find some unique fossils during the geological expedition!
