National Park Drents-Friese Wold - Diever

N 52.880847451913 / E 6.310080326

Six thousand hectares of primal nature of wondrous beauty on the border between Drenthe and Friesland. Endless wandering in this National Park, where the protection of nature is paramount, along forests of oak, Scots pine and spruce, along meandering streams, shifting sands and vast heathlands.

Within this national park are nature reserves such as the Aekingerzand, Doldersummerveld and Hoekenbrink. Each subarea has its own specific flora and fauna. Maintained and managed by various nature organisations and with the help of various large grazers. There are Scottish Highlanders, Salers, Limousins and of course the Drents Heideschaap.

Furthermore, pine marten, roe deer, salamanders, lizards, vipers and many other animals live here among the bell gentian, wolf claw, sundew and lavender heather. In the Drenthe part, you will find burial mounds, dolmens and other traces of habitation from the Late Stone Age. In the Frisian part lies the Canada Lake and the Bosberg Tower.

At various places in this National Park you will find a visitor centre, such as in Diever, Appelscha, Doldersum or Hoogersmilde.
