Mussel of Bruinisse - Bruinisse
When cycling along the Havendijk in Bruinisse, you can't miss it! The Mussel of Bruinisse shows off on a hill, overlooking the harbour and the sea.
The water at Bruinisse turned out to be the perfect place for growing mussels and oysters, thanks to the tide, the many channels and the shallow water. Around 1900, the village had as many as 120 ships for mussel fishing. The inhabitants of 'Bru', as they call the village itself, also mostly worked in the mussel sector.
You can still find no fewer than 23 mussel farms, mussel wholesalers, speciality shops and the Mosselgilde: a number of high-class restaurants that together stand for high quality mussels, which they proudly serve every season.
