Museum ‘t Ponthús, also known as Toankamer ’t Ponthús, is located in Stavoren. The museum is located in two buildings that were originally service houses for employees of the shipping company that maintained the train ferry connection between Stavoren and Enkhuizen. Although these houses were long since no longer occupied by ferry employees, they remained known as the Ponthuzen, which explains the museum's name.
The museum brings Stavoren's rich history to life in a contemporary way. A timeline through the building highlights important events from the beginning of our era to the present day. You will learn about the Battle of Stavoren, the Hanseatic past, city rights, the Norman invasion, the Blockhouse, whalers and early fishing. Recent history is also covered, such as the Hoogland pumping station, the old and new lock, the lighthouses, mobilisation, World War II, industry and the train accident at Stavoren.
A special exhibition is dedicated to the legend of the Vrouwtje van Stavoren, one of the best-known Dutch legends. A film telling the story of the ring, the fish and the grain is shown in its own hall. There are also exhibitions on the ferry gate and steam ferry service, the station and the railway, the operation of the gauge house, the Staverse Jol and the plane crash in the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea.
The museum is open from May to October, Tuesday to Saturday between 12:30 and 17:00.
