Vreeswijk is now a neighbourhood in Nieuwegein, but it used to be an independent village characterised by its historic inland navigation and shipyard. The shipyard is now a museum. In the Exhibition Centre, you can see what inland navigation used to look like, what types of ships there were, how they were built and how they could propel themselves. Take a journey along the panels and photos and see the tools people used in the shipyard.
In the Outdoor Museum, called 'De Roef', you will learn more about the life of a skipper's family. What did their house look like and what were things like at home? Skippers' wives tell you all about it in the former skippers' quarters.
The museum's shipyard is still active. Old barges are restored, repaired and maintained there.
