The history of the village of Nieuwlande is very impressive, especially in the period between 1940-1945. What would you do in times of war? This village did something that was not known anywhere else: the whole village provided a safe place for people in hiding. Nobody knew from each other who was or was not bailing out people in hiding, which made it safe. For this, the village received Israel's Yad Vashem award on 11 April 1985, an honour only two places in the world received. An important message to pass on to younger generations.
Scenically and historically, Nieuwlande's surroundings are fascinating. The paths along the water, through the forests and wastelands give an impression of how the landscape contributed to the resistance. And what would it be like to travel this road on old bicycles with a sub-diver on the back? Most transportation of the hiders and resistance people was by bicycle.
Step off at this impressive museum De Duikelaar, or Nieuwlande's museum of absconding, and discover the secrets and resistance of a village that went silent.
