On the banks of the Lage Boezem is Museum mill Blokweer, also known as 'De Blokker' or the 'Blokkerse Wip'. The authentic seesaw mill is still operative. A seesaw mill is an old type of polder mill developed in the 15th century. You can recognise a seesaw mill by the pyramid-shaped construction under the mill tower. In that pyramid is a vertical tube that extends into the upper house, which is often painted in beautiful colours. Thanks to this tube, the upper house is fully rotatable, including the tail. Traditionally, these mill types are equipped with a water scoop wheel.
Inside, the Blokweers Mill is set up as a museum, where you can learn about the history and working methods of mills. While you can hear the mill roar in the background, you will learn more about this characteristic mill in various ways. Children also learn in a fascinating way what it is like to work with and in a mill.
A visit to the museum mill is an enrichment for your day out in Kinderdijk. You can visit the windmill after purchasing a ticket, available at the Kinderdijk visitor centre or online.
