Anyone cycling along the calm IJsselmeer today will hardly be able to imagine the struggle against the water. The former island of Urk used to lie in the often raging Zuiderzee. On the island, with its own dialect and costumes, fishing was the main source of income. They didn't get rich from it, but it put bread on the table. Here, too, the fish paid dearly: life was hard and poor and many fishermen lost their lives at sea.
The former town hall houses the Museum Het Oude Raadhuis. The collection does not show luxury items, as Urkers lived very frugally. You will see household items and tools that you could buy in the small village shops back then. There is also an art collection by artists who visited Urk when it was still an island, in search of authentic life. A visit to the museum will give you a good idea of Urk and the Urks in former times.
