The Dolhuys is located in the former leprosy pest and dolhuys, whose origins date back to 1320. The leprosy pest and dolhuys was originally located outside the city walls of Haarlem as a shelter for "madmen" and sufferers of contagious diseases. It has had a function within health care for 700 years, most recently as a crisis center and day treatment for the demented elderly. Now it is a museum and knowledge center of psychiatry.
