Elburg is a special town on the former Zuiderzee with a rich history. Thanks to its favourable location on the water, Elburg grew into a flourishing fishing and trading town. The town joined the Hanseatic League in the second half of the 14th century and gained access to important trade routes and markets. It became an important link between the Baltic region, Scandinavia and other Hanseatic cities in the Netherlands and Germany.
But its waterfront location also had a downside. Elburg had many problems with flooding and danger of flooding from the Zuiderzee. For this reason, on the orders of Duke William of Gelre, it was even moved in its entirety to higher ground in 1392. The new town was built in a rectangular street pattern and protected by ramparts and city moats.
Today, a beautiful 15th-century Agnietenklooster within Elburg's city walls houses Museum Elburg. This museum introduces you to the past and present of the former fishing town on the Zuiderzee. The museum has an extensive collection of objects from the history of Elburg and its surroundings. The Vischpoort, the casemates and the wall house are also part of the museum. The museum is the perfect location to start your visit to Elburg.
The museum has stood the test of time and responds to today's desire to make museums more interactive. For example, you can take part in an exciting escaperoute at the museum and take in the history of Gelderland in a playful way.
