Ben and Phylos from Studio EarlyBirds created a beautiful and colourful mural in the bicycle tunnel on the Oostersingelgracht in honour of Haarlem's twinning with its Zimbabwean sister city Mutare. In 2007, by 18 artists from Mutare, 40 sculptures were created and placed in the gardens of the Haarlem Damask located next to the tunnel. A hidden gem few Haarlem residents know about.
To introduce people to the city link between the Zimbabwean and the North Holland city in an artistic and approachable way, the artists of Studio EarlyBirds created a mix of Haarlem and Mutare elements in their mural. For instance, you can find the port service building further afield, the Adriaan windmill, nature and wild animals in the mural. It also incorporates statues of the Mutaran artists and the coordinates of both cities.
