The Munster church was founded around 1218 by Count Gerard III of Gelre. The church was also intended as the burial place of the count and his wife, Margaretha van Brabant, which gave the church a more powerful appearance than was usual.
The young Pierre Cuijpers was commissioned to restore part of the church in 1850. Apparently, this went well, because in 1863 he was commissioned to carry out a large-scale restoration. Among other things, the octagonal towers were replaced by square towers. The design was carried out, but it generated so much comment that Pierre moved to Amsterdam.
