On 11 January 1944, an Allied plane runs into trouble over Noord-Sleen. It catches fire and all crew members abandon the burning aircraft, which threatens to crash into a residential area in Noord-Sleen. The pilot Th. E. White manages just in time to steer the plane away and exit in time. Further away from the plane, he lands by parachute on the Sleenerzand.
In memory of this heroic act and the disaster it prevented, a memorial stone for the pilot has been erected here.
