The first Kasteel Montfort dates from 1260 and was built on this site by Hendrik van Gelre, bishop of Liège.
During the Eighty Years' War, the castle fulfilled a modest military role. In 1685, the fortifications were demolished, which had just been added in 1536 due to the rise of the cannon. In addition, the castle was largely blown up. The remaining parts of Montfort were used as a residence for the drossaard (official of the lord of the manor).
In 1780, unfortunately, the residential part of the castle was also demolished. Only a ruin remained. Around 1850, the castle ruins came into the possession of a wealthy Roermond paper manufacturer. He had an octagonal brick country house built on the foundations of the old castle tower. The design of this octagonal hunting lodge with neo-Gothic elements, is attributed to Roermond architect Pierre Cuypers, although no documents are known to confirm this.
Montfort Castle, also known as De Grauwert, is not just another castle ruin. Many medieval-style activities are organised there. You can relive the Middle Ages during an annual event: Middeleeuws Montfort.
