Originally, six iron mills stood on this picturesque quay. Built for light milling, as they only had to overcome a height difference of about 40 cm. They stroked the water from one polder basin to another, as it were. Each mill had a letter, from A to F as seen from Alkmaar. Mill F burned down completely in 1688.
After the milling job was finished in 1941, the iron mills lost their function. Quays, sluices and mill chambers fell into disrepair or were filled in. Mill A was dismantled and stored in the Arnhem Open Air Museum. Nothing came of the plan to rebuild it there, because an English bomb destroyed the storage shed. At the time, there were still four.
The remaining iron mills were rented out as housing and hardly ever turned. Until they came under the care of the Molenstichting Alkmaar Windmill Foundation on 10 March 2000. Since then, all the mills have been lovingly restored. They are now inhabited and operated by volunteer qualified millers.
