In the past, during the Dutch Golden Age, there were over 200 paltrok sawmills in this area. De Gekroonde Poelenburg is thus a rare type of mill with a rich history. It was built in 1866 or 1867 to saw wood for shipbuilding and house construction, playing a crucial role in the economic prosperity of the Netherlands during that period.
In 1960, the mill had to be relocated to make way for the construction of the Poelenburgwijk district. Fortunately, in 1963, it was rebuilt on the Zaanse Schans thanks to the efforts of the Zaansche Molen foundation. It now stands on the site where the De Grootvorst mill once stood. The adjacent wood storage shed was added in 1991.
In 2004, De Gekroonde Poelenburg underwent a significant renovation, restoring its exterior and returning it to its original green color. Its distinctive stepped roof was also repaired during this process, and later, the color was slightly darkened.
Besides De Gekroonde Poelenburg, only one other paltrok sawmill remains in the Zaan region: the Held Jozua.
