Due to the economic growth in the agricultural sector, there was a great need for sawn timber in Friesland in the 18th century. The mill supplied a lot of wood to the local shipbuilding yards. In 1918, electricity was introduced as the source of power. Over the years, De Rat was stripped of its cap, rods and scaffolding, after which the remaining hull disfigured the landscape for decades.
In 1955, the owner asked the Provincial Executive for permission to demolish the remainder. They suggested that the municipality of IJlst should take over the mill. That happened in 1956. One hundred and fifty years after its arrival in IJlst, the fully restored sawmill De Rat was officially put back into use on 27 May 1978.
