Mulder Pot Mill, located in Kropswolde, Groningen, has a rich history dating back to the 16th century. Before 1500, there was a standard mill at the current location of the mill, probably belonging to the nearby St Mary's Chapel. In 1787 it was replaced by a ground sail mill with an oak octagonal structure and thatch roofing. After a fire in 1919, the octagonal structure of the ‘De Hoop’ oil mill in Vierverlaten was transported and placed in Kropswolde in 1923, giving the current mill its present form.
From 1923 the mill functioned as a flour mill. Around 1930 an electric milling mechanism was installed to enable milling even during windless periods. After the Second World War the mill fell into disrepair and was no longer used for milling grain. In 1977, E.D. Pot, the father of the current miller Jan Pot, bought the mill and had it restored. During this restoration, the electric milling mechanism was removed and a second set of millstones was added. The mill has been operational again since the restoration was completed in 1981.
Mulder Pot is now a modern mill that grinds all kinds of flour. The company works with local farmers as much as possible for the purchase of grains. Home bakers can visit the adjacent mill shop for an extensive range of flour and baking products, including various types of bread and cake mixes, baking supplies and regional products. A webshop has also been set up on the site.
The mill is affiliated with the Traditional Grain Millers Guild, which means quality and craftsmanship are of paramount importance. The millers who are affiliated with this guild meet regularly to exchange knowledge and product information, thus maintaining the tradition of traditional milling.
