The mill is part of the Streekmuseum Ommen and is managed by the Stichting Ommer Molens. The mill originates from the Zaanstreek; has operated in Deventer and was moved to Ommen in 1824. In 1954, the municipality of Ommen bought the dilapidated saw mill and had it restored in 1960. In the process, the old saw barn disappeared and the current substructure was built to house the regional museum. A few millers constructed and installed a grinding seat under their own management in 1999. There are plans to restore the sawmill as well.
