Corn mill De Hoop is a ground-sailer, which means it can be operated from the ground. Although this type of mill obviously needs wind to turn, ground-sailers are the lowest models and are mainly located where there are no high-rise buildings nearby.
The Lunterse mill was given the name 'De Hoop' after its construction in 1855. The initiator and first miller of De Hoop, Johannes Ross, only enjoyed his mill for two years. He then left for America.
In the following years, the mill has several owners. In 1912, Hendrikus van Veldhuisen took over De Hoop, having already worked as a miller's servant for decades. Under his direction, the penciled boards were replaced by a thatched covering in 1905. Incidentally, this thatched suit was not replaced again until 2010! New sails were installed and a separate grinding mill where grinding could be done by motor power.
In 1953, Van Veldhuisen died and his sons took over his business. The Van Veldhuisen family ran it for three generations and did much to preserve not only the mill in Lunteren, but also the other mills in the province of Gelderland.
The current miller is Eep Top. He started as Willen van Veldhuisen's apprentice in the 1970s and still faithfully runs the mill every Saturday in the traditional way.
