If you visit the mill in Surhuisterveen on a Saturday morning, you’ll hear the creaking of wood, feel the wind through the sails, and smell freshly ground flour. De Feanstermoune, originally built in 1864, is a national monument and a living example of traditional craftsmanship. When the wind is strong enough, the millers still grind wholemeal flour in the traditional way – available directly in the small mill shop.
The sail system of this tower mill is quite special: no traditional canvas sails, but wooden shutters that adjust to the wind automatically. A rarity in Friesland, and a fine bit of engineering to see up close.
Next to the mill stands an old engine house, where experiments with mechanical milling took place in the early 20th century – first using petroleum, later diesel engines. This part has also been restored and is fully operational, so you're not only visiting a mill, but also a piece of early industrial history.
