Flour mill De Bleeke Dood (The Pale Death) (1656) stood in the south of Zaandijk and was the counterpart of water mill Het Leven (The Life), which stood in the north. Thus, the Zaandijkers always lived between life and death (Het Leven and De Dood). Unfortunately, Het Leven watermill has not existed since 1904, and De Bleeke Dood was almost lost as well. The mill had fallen into such disrepair that by the 1930s it was almost impossible to recognise it as a mill.
In 1950, the Zaansche Molen Society became the owner and De Bleeke Dood was renovated. Now we can enjoy the oldest existing wooden stage mill in the Netherlands. The mill's nameplate shows a skeleton painted with a scythe, symbolising the transience of life.
