'The Needle', as the inhabitants of Hoogland also call this memorial, commemorates thirty inhabitants of Hoogland who were killed during the Second World War. The names of the victims are carved into the column. Among them are the twelve villagers who were killed during a shoot-out between the Germans and a resistance group on 23 April 1945. Eight of them were resistance fighters, the other four were residents of the street where the shooting took place.
The memorial pole was unveiled on 4 May 1946.
