A religious monument has stood at this spot on the Gulperberg for centuries. In 1834, a mission cross was placed there for the first time, and annual processions were held to it. In 1935, the Mary monument was placed on the initiative of the pastor-deacon H. Erens, who was the pastor of St. Peter's Church in Gulpen. The piece of land on the Gulperberg was bought for 1 guilder.
Piet Gerrits designed the pedestal and Charles Vos sculpted the statue of the Virgin Mary. On Ascension Day in 1935 the statue was consecrated, but that didn't go by unnoticed. An estimated 30,000 people turned out and twenty floats took part in a procession to the statue.
Admire the statue that is no less than 13 metres high, of which the pedestal forms the largest part (10 metres). The view is phenomenal!
