Between Eastermar and the waters of De Leien, you’ll find a spot where silence takes the lead. De Putten lookout tower stands on the foundation of an old pumping station and offers a stunning panorama of the water-rich landscape. From up here, you can see the water shimmering between the reeds, with little islands floating in the light in the distance.
De Leien is a shallow lake, once formed through peat extraction. Today, it’s an important habitat for birds. In winter, large flocks of wigeons and teal gather here. During migration, you may spot whinchats, black-tailed godwits and marsh harriers. Even the rare smew sometimes makes an appearance.
But this area isn’t just for the birds. Paddleboarders, swimmers, walkers and nature lovers all find space and stillness here. Paths around the lake lead past open water, small woods and remnants of old peatlands. It’s a view of the land as it once was — and thanks to careful management, still is.
Stop for a moment, climb to the top, and take a quiet look around: this is one of those places that don’t need many words. Just time to take it all in.
