During the war, the Germans expanded the existing Molenheide airfield into one of the largest in Europe: Fliegerhorst Gilze-Rijen. This had far-reaching consequences for local residents.
Houses and land were requisitioned and civilian casualties were also caused by bombings. Bombers took off daily from Fliegerhorst to attack the Allies. The airfield looked like a peasant village from the air, while several kilometres away a mock airfield was constructed, complete with wooden aircraft propelled mechanically. On 28 October 1944, Rijen was liberated by Polish and British units. You can hear the whole story via Liberation Route Europe's Listening Column.
