On Saturday 4 November 1944, a 12-year-old boy climbs out of the shelter in Den Hout. Den Hout was in the front line during the Battle of the Mark Canal. You can hear the boy's story via the listening column.
Den Hout, along with Terheijden and Wagenberg, was one of the villages that found itself right in the line of fire during the battle of the Mark Canal on 3 November 1944. The village was totally destroyed, farms burned down and cattle lay dead in the meadow. Bodies of soldiers lay everywhere and there were also many civilian casualties. By evening, Den Hout was liberated but at a very high price: behind every name on the monument in the cemetery is a tragic story. Also visit the war memorial in the cemetery.
