Months before our country was liberated from the Germans, a liberation took place in Zeeland. With Antwerp taken, the port could be used to supply the Allies. A shipping route across the Scheldt was necessary for this. Only that was still in the hands of the Germans.
From the south, Allied troops were advancing towards Zeeland. In an attempt to force the German occupiers to surrender, the Allies bombed several dykes in Walcheren, flooding much of the area. While troops landed in Vlissingen and Westkapelle, others tried to take Zuid-Beveland via the Sloedam.
On 6 November 1944, Middelburg was liberated from the occupying forces.
