Otterlo was the scene of a short but fierce battle during the liberation. The 1st Canadian Infantry Division and the 5th Canadian Armoured Division wanted to prevent the last remaining German infantry unit (about 800 to 1,000 men), consisting mainly of Hitlerjugend, from advancing to the west of the Netherlands.
Because radio communications failed during the battle, the battle degenerated into a chaotic situation with many losses on the German side. Especially as the Canadian units with their Churchill tanks, equipped with flamethrowers, caused death and destruction in a short time. Many teenage soldiers aged 13 to 16 died here. The next day in Otterlo, too, the German occupiers capitulated.
