Of the several mills that once defined the image of Vriezenveen, only the Leemans Mill remains. The mill was built in 1862. At first, the eight-sided tower mill stood in the middle of a wet peat landscape. Subsequently, residential buildings were built along Hammerweg, slightly reducing the mill's dominant position. Due to the height of the mill, this did not cause any problems for the time being.
After the war, it switched back to motor power so that a rapid decay of the mill seemed inevitable. A large-scale action prevented this. With contributions from the Hollandsche Molen, the state, the province and the then owner, the mill was restored in 1962.
Again, during the period from 1975-2000, much restoration was carried out and the mill could be made millable again. Nevertheless, it was only after the year 2000 that volunteer millers were able to operate the Leemansmolen again. Luckily, because until today, this beautiful mill still defines the image of its surroundings.
The mill now grinds barley flour. There is also a shop where you can buy the mill's flour and more great local products.
