The mines needed long wooden logs to shore up mine galleries, so a production forest with fast-growing softwood was created here. Natuurmonumenten is now transforming this forest into a varied deciduous forest with oak, rowan and birch. Birds such as the unusual crossbill, woodpeckers and owls nest here. Various birds of prey can also be found there.
