Excavations in the hamlet of Varsen indicate habitation by farmers and hunters of the Funnel Beaker Culture in the period 3400 - 2850 BC. The monument, an initiative of Local Interest Varsen, stands at a site where traces of habitation such as poles have been found. Wooden wells have also been brought to the surface at this location. One of them is in the Ommer regional museum.
Varsen is one of the largest hamlets in the municipality of Ommen. Its pastures were right on the Vecht. From here one could fish just fine. On the terrain behind, one could hunt. The old yards of the hamlet have been preserved for centuries.
The monument is somewhat hidden in the field. The brown sign saying "Cultural-historical monument Varsen" shows you the way.
