The Rucphense Heide was used for many years by the KCT as a landing area for paratroopers and was referred to as Djokjakarta landing area. This name recalls the occupation of Djokjakarta on 19 December 1948. On this date, Operation Crow was launched in the former Dutch East Indies.
Here, the Special Forces and Para Combat Group, precursors of today's Commandos Corps, played a crucial role. About 350 Para Commando troops had to capture the airfield near Djokjakarta. After capturing this, they could immediately advance to the seat of the republican government in Djokjakarta. This city was quickly taken without losses. Within seven hours, the occupation was complete.
Still today, this 1,200-hectare area is a military training ground that is accessible daily, subject to conditions.
