Krammer Wind Farm is the largest citizens' initiative in the Netherlands, set up by nearly 5,000 members of the cooperatives Zeeuwind and Deltawind. The farm has 34 180-metre-high wind turbines. Together, the wind turbines generate 102 megawatts of green power, enough for 100,000 households.
Construction began in 2017 and the park was officially opened by King Willem-Alexander in 2019. The generated power is sold directly to multinationals such as DSM, Google, Nouryon and Philips, without the intervention of an energy supplier.
However, there is more that makes this wind farm special: the innovative camera detection system. As soon as a bald eagle, other bird or bat is detected nearby, the wind turbine is shut down. This allows the animals to fly over safely.
This detection system is also used to limit the inconvenience to local residents. At night, the red lights on the turbines turn on only when an aircraft is detected nearby. The advanced technologies, power sales model and genesis make it a unique project in the Netherlands and even Europe.
